Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

To all of our dear friends and family!  Here’s the latest news from our NEW neck of the woods.

CLOSING THE BUSINESS:

We took our last orders for Rycraft Cookie Stamps in December 2015, then got them all shipped out by the end of February, and started packing for Costa Rica. Our landlady sold the house we’d been renting in Chester, CA, so we spent our last 3 months camped out in the back of the warehouse.

THE MOVE TO COSTA RICA:

In late May the 40’ container was loaded, then we took off May 23rd for Costa Rica in hopes that we would spend our retirement years there enjoying a much lower cost of living. We spent the first 3 months there in a tiny condo (orange building left) while we searched for a house to rent.

IN OUR CONDO IN ALAJUELA, COSTA RICA:

No English TV so we watched movies and US news online. The indoor temp stayed at 78º-80º 24/7 so we used a large fan to keep cool. We got around by taxi mostly (sometimes by bus) and learned to communicate using Carol’s high-school Spanish.

ROBIN'S BIRTHDAY:

We shopped the local farmers’ market and on June 1st we celebrated Robin’s 73rd birthday with a home-cooked meatloaf dinner.

ON THE STREETS OF ALAJUELA:

And we shopped at a July street fair across fromMacDonald’s in downtown Alajuela.

AT A B&B IN SAN RAMON, COSTA RICA:

Then we took a few days to explore San Ramon, where we rented a small house for 1 night but were driven out by the bad smell coming out of the drains... no wonder the rent was so low! Here’s Carol in the patio of the lovely B&B where we stayed for 2 nights above San Ramon.

OUR HOUSE IN HEREDIA, COSTA RICA:

In August we finally found a house which was the right size, but cost much more in rent than we had hoped for. We were told that so many people are moving to Costa Rica that rents have been climbing fast... in the summer months there are basically no rentals available since US and European vacationers rent the best houses for the entire summer.

A TRIP TO THE POST OFFICE:

Here we are enjoying a beautiful day in the park in Heredia, after a trip to our PO Box at the post office..

REALTIY CHECK:

When our container arrived in late August and we started to unpack, we  realized that our
new adventure was just that: a vacation adventure but not suitable as our permanent
retirement spot. So we made the difficult and expensive decision to repack the container and
head back to the USA.

COMING HOME:

On October 13, David picked us up at the Sacramento airport and we spent a few days
with him, Maggie and Gavin (now 8). Then we headed up to Chester to pick up our
car from some friends, then on to Idaho where our internet research told us the cost of
living was more affordable for seniors on a fixed income.

FINDING A HOUSE IN IDAHO:

Renting a house in the Boise area turned out to be next to impossible due to the heavy influx of people from CA and OR, causing rents to soar and creating tremendous competition to be the first one to get there – a whole new level of stress. We discovered that it is actually cheaper to BUY a house here than to rent one, so that is what we did.

We found a little 1-acre property in Emmett, a small town just north of Boise, which is where Carol’s mother was born. There is a barn, a workshop and a studio for Robin, plus a fenced pasture (Carol still wants a horse!), and the deal included 4 cats we agreed to take (3 of the 4 are shown right).

We will be moving in mid-December, then heading down to Auburn to
spend Christmas with David, Maggie and Gavin.
