#039 – Dala Horse Magnet or Ornament
Clay Casting Project

Celebrate your Scandinavian heritage or
a summer vacation of internation travel!

Materials Needed:

1 Rycraft cookie stamp or craft stamp #039 – Dala Horse
Clay* - we used Creative Paperlay® which air dries to a paintable pure white (no oven needed)
1 clay casting* - #039 – Dala Horse (see Basic Clay Casting Instructions)
1 2" round cookie cutter
Sandpaper or emery board (fine grit)
Acrylic primer (optional)
Acrylic clear varnish (optional)
Acrylic paints: dark blue, medium blue, white, metallic gold (or colors of your choice)
Tacky glue or hot glue
1 magnet (from a craft store) or a 12-inch length of 1/8" ribbon or jute for ornament hanger

*Note:  Alternately, the casting for this project may be made from paper instead of clay (see Basic Paper Casting Instructions). The choice is yours.
Instructions:

1.  While clay is wet, cut out casting using cookie cutter. If you are going to make an ornament, use toothpick to poke a hole in the top (see How to Make a Hole). Let dry.
2.   Sand rough edges smooth.
3.  Optional: Apply primer and let dry.
4.  Apply white paint to background and let dry. Apply dark blue to circle of dots and horse's mane and eye, and let dry. Apply medium blue to horse's body and let dry. Apply gold to center of dots and to horses bridle and straps as shown.
5.  Optional:  Apply a coat of varnish for permanence. Note: Varnish will leave a more glossy finish.
5.  Use hot glue to attach magnet to back, or for ornament, attach hanger.
